Exotic mosquitoes

National Public Health Service (NPHS) - Northern Region supports efforts to keep exotic mosquitoes from becoming established in New Zealand.

Mosquitoes from overseas – called ‘exotic’ mosquitoes – can carry diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika, yellow fever and malaria.

  • If you think you have found an exotic mosquito, phone the Ministry of Primary Industries’ mosquito hotline number 0800 MOZZIE (0800 66 99 43).
  • If you have health concerns after being bitten by a mosquito, phone Healthline on 0800 611 116 or see your doctor or practice nurse.

NPHS - Northern Region works with the Ministry for Primary Industries to support border control. NPHS - Northern Region is responsible for:

  • regular mosquito surveys at potential entry ports such as airports and seaports
  • support and advice to the Ministry for Primary Industries
