Attribute to Dr Carrie Bryers, Medical Officer of Health, National Public Health Service

Auckland Council Pollution Control is still assessing the surrounding area following last night’s fire at Hillside Road, Wairau. If this identifies any hazards to nearby residents health advice will be issued as necessary.

Further advice on cleaning up safely is available from info.health.nz/fires-smoke. This includes what to do if your property smells of smoke or if you are concerned about home-grown veggies or your water tank. Continue to follow advice from local emergency services staff on the ground. If you have a respiratory illness like asthma or bronchitis, you may wish to stay away from your house until it has been cleaned.

Smoke can be a health hazard. Breathing in fine particles of ash or soot can worsen pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma or heart disease. If you experience shortness of breath, wheezing, asthma or chest pain please see your doctor immediately or call 111. For health advice you can also contact Healthline on 0800 611 116.

There are alerts on Safeswim for Milford beach, Wairua Outlet, and Castor Bay due to the fire. Please therefore avoid contact with the water at these beaches, and follow the advice on SafeSwim before visiting nearby swimming and recreational water spots.
