Public health and Early Childhood Education centres

We carry out health and safety assessments for early childhood education centres (ECEs) in the Auckland region to assess compliance with legislative requirements.

These assessments are carried out as part of licensing or relicensing of centres, or if a concern has been raised about a centre. We look at child health at the centres, hygiene and infection control, play areas and sleeping facilities. For more information on the assessment please refer to the Health and Safety Guidelines for ECECs.

These include health and safety standards required by sections 45 and 46 of the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008, on behalf of the Ministry of Education. This assessment is delegated by the Ministry of Health to public health units.

The assessment is one of a number of steps centres must take before they will be granted an opening licence from the Ministry of Education.

To arrange a visit from one of our officers, please call us on (09) 623 4600 and ask for the Health Protection Officer on duty.

Notify public health of a gastroenteritis outbreak at your service

If three or more staff or tamariki from a single area/room of your site have gastroenteritis symptoms (vomiting or diarrhoea) please notify public health. We can then provide support and guidance to help stop an outbreak and protect staff and tamariki.
